Selah: A "Holy Pause"

As we read through the book of Psalms, you're going to notice this word selah pop up from time to time. Each time we're going to pause for a brief moment after the word before continuing to read. This holy pause is for reflection. If you want, pause and reflect. Or briefly reflect in the second pause. Either way, I want to prepare you for what is to come. Selah

[00:00:04] Hello and welcome to The Audio Bible Podcast. As we enter the book of Psalms, I just wanted to take a moment to focus in on what we just heard in Psalm chapter 3 and this little note called Selah. We're going to notice it throughout the course of different Psalms, certainly not every Psalm, and maybe not even the majority of Psalms, but this idea of Selah.

[00:00:30] The language is actually a little bit hard to translate, but it may mean something like a pause, a crescendo, or a musical interlude, or it could have some other unknown meaning. The way that I have most often understood this idea of Selah is this idea of being able to take a holy pause and just reflect on the words that have come before.

[00:00:57] And so it's an opportunity to maybe think more deeply, not just read straight through, but to actually pause and think about the implication of the words that have come before and how those words that have come before may impact what comes next. So, when you hear the word Selah, I will most often be taking a short pause after saying that word.

[00:01:23] It's an opportunity to, if you need to, rewind and go back to listen beforehand, because you're not going to have much warning that it's coming. But it's an opportunity to go back and listen again, or it's an opportunity to just pause and reflect on some of those last words that were just said before the word Selah. So, looking forward to working through the book of Psalms. We're going to be in it for the next 147 days. We've got 150 Psalms to work through.

[00:01:50] So, yeah, looking forward to that as we get to read the word of God aloud together. We're going to be together.
